This afternoon the Oakland Raiders will officially announce the hiring of interim Head Coach Tom Cable. As a Raider fan, and a Boise State fan, I find this hiring discourging and ignorant. But then again, I feel the same way about Al Davis.

The problem with the Raiders isn't just coaching and players, it's Al Davis. He either needs to sell the team or face the facts that the game has changed and his way isn't always the best way. I like to think of him as low-budget Jerry Jones, but at least Jones can get a .500 ball club. But all that is for another day. Today's Cable's day so let him bask, one-year from now we'll be talking about who the new candidate for the job is.

So we hired Cable. Yes, the same Tom Cable I blame for ruining the Idaho program up North, where he led our beloved Vandals to an 11-35 overall record in four seasons. His resume also includes two losing years with the Atlanta Falcons as an offensive line coach, and lets not forget that offensive explosion he brought to UCLA for two years. A majority of that staff was fired too.

I don't think Mike Shannahan wants to return, pretty sure Al still owes him a check or two. Art Shell? He's been hired and fired only to be hired and fired years down the road, same result losses. Brian Billick? He'd laugh, probably out loud, then decline politely. Why not bring John Gruden back? He's won there before and obviously knows how to deal with the ancient Davis. But Al didn't want that, he wanted the Cableman.

Hopefully a year from now I'll be eating these words, after all I'm a Raider fan. But in reality I probably won't be. Tom Cable hasn't won anywhere before and sadly as fan I don't expect him to start anytime soon. Good luck Tom you'll need it.
