Spent the day watching the 5A games at the Idaho Center
Centennial vs. Vallivue
Zach Kelsh got off to a much better start for the Falcons and Vallivue was eventually able to build up
to a 13 point lead at the end of the third quarter. But a strong comeback by the Patriots got them within 1. But Vallivue was able to hold on and a clutch free throw by Drew Osburn with under 5 seconds to go gave the Falcons a 65-61 win.
Rocky Mountain vs. Lake City
The Grizzlies again produced a very balanced attack, getting an early lift from Ryan Skurdal and then good finishes by Rilee Bruneel and Josh Hasquet. Lake City got a great contribution off the bench from Brady Smith. But Rocky was too much early, got a good lead and never looked back finishing with a 20 point win, 72-52.
Post Falls vs. Madison
In a battle of contrasting styles it was the athletic play making Trojans that wer
e able to come out on top versus the more systematic Bobcats. Senior Shawn Reid had a much better game and sophomore Marcus Colbert is proving to be a top player in this state tournament. Each of them had 24 points, Colber with 5 rebounds and 5 assists, Reid with 10 rebounds. I'm very impressed with the way Post Falls plays intense defense, can create on offense and plays with a chip on their shoulder.
For Madison, their senior leader Josh Fuller got into some foul trouble which limited their offense and they never really recovered. Credit their defense at the end for creating some turn overs and easy baskets, giving them a shot. Ryker Pierce had 20 points for Madison
Eagle vs. Borah
Borah jumped out in the first quarter but Eagle recovered and eventually took a nice lead into the fourth quarter. Borah's defense really kept Eagle under control, giving up few easy baskets. The only Mustang able to do any real damage was junior Daved Gillmor, finishing with 18 points.
Eagle would get the lead to 10 but Borah was able to close the gap, drawing fouls on made field goals and making the ensuing free throw. They eventually got the lead to three and possession of the ball with 4 seconds remaining. But a Craig Spjute 3-pointer as time expired was off the mark, sending Eagle to the championship game with a 45-42 win.
