Re: Let the Madness begin...
Way too many Treasure Valley schools in the 5A hardware games. Didn't all of the TV schools lose in the first round last year? At least Rocky gets to play Eagle this year so they can advance at least one school into the second round. Borah in the state championship game? Come on Ty...
You're really picking against the White Pine League? Hasn't that league won like 7 titles in a row or something? Prairie will roll through the 1A tourney and I don't think you're holding them to 36. That Sigler kid might have 36 himself.
The rest of your picks look great. Not many TV schools except 4A in the finals. I guess that's why the IHSAA made the 4A division anyway.
Thanks Ty for the blog.

Re: Let the Madness begin...
Last year was rough for the TV and I don’t think a lot of people saw Lewiston coming in 09. I like the route Borah has to take to reach the final. It will be tough for Eagle to beat any of the 5A SIC teams three or more times. I picked Madison because Bill Hawkins does a great job getting his teams ready. I know I wasn’t surprised when they advanced last year. Thanks for the heads up on the Sigler kid. Should be a great Championship game if Prairie and Castleford square off. As far as Glenns Ferry, Crane is a great athlete. Its tournament time baby, seeds don’t matter, games are played at a neutral site and its win or go home. First team to go 3-0, that’s all that matters come March 7th.

Re: Let the Madness begin...
No way Borah makes it to the finals. They might be able to win their first round game but don't count Lake City out in that one. Eagle will walk into the finals but will face a battle tested team. Whoever comes out of the PF, Madison, Vallivue bracket will take down the Mustangs. Like you saide they won't beat Vallivue again, Madison could give them fits with their slow down game and solid D, and PF is the one team in the state that can out run the Mustangs.

Re: Let the Madness begin...
I think Eagle/Borah went to OT in the 5A SIC District Semis. Ask any coach and they’ll tell you it’s tough to beat any team three times in a season. My picks may not be popular but they’re picks. How about you pick 1 of the 3 teams that might face Eagle, and post your opinion. That’s part of the fun that goes along with theState tourney, we all have an opinion. I want to hear everyone’s predictions, thoughts, outcomes, surprise team, you name it any division.

Re: Let the Madness begin...
I am a former bball coach and you are correct that beating a team 3 times is very difficult, but I think Eagle has too much talent for the other teams in their bracket, just my opinion. Vallivue always plays them tough and if they beat PF and Madison back to back then I pick them to win it all. Same for PF if they can get through Madison and Vallivue then I pick them to knock Eagle off. And you can never count Madison out. If I had to make a pick I would say PF vs. Eagle in a high scoring game 82-79 PF. Madison to win the 3rd place game and Vallivue to win the consolation bracket. My surprise team is Lake City, they are well coached and play solid defense, if they play well offensively they can surprise someone (just ask Post Falls).

Do you really think Salmon will get by Fruitland in the first round on Thursday? Priest River has an amazing record, but I'm a Homedale High alum, so I will be cheering for the Trojans. Filer and Shelley should be a good matchup and I predict Filer to win the championship.
My 3A Picks:
**Thursday** Fruitland over Salmon Snake River over St. Maries Filer over Shelley Homedale over Priest River
**Friday** Salmon over St. Maries (St. Maries out) Priest River over Shelley (Shelley out) Fruitland over Snake River Filer over Homedale
**Saturday** Championship: Filer over Fruitland 3rd Place: Homedale over Snake River Consolation: Priest River over Salmon

Re: Let the Madness begin...
Filer is going to win it all... There are some good teams but filer is solid.. We have very good shooters and coaching... Bryce Beard is going to come out gins blazing.. And so is Terrell Bailey, two of the best shooters around... then you have Justin Orban who is the power and will crash the boards... I'm guessing he'll get 10+ boards every game, not to mention he can score as well... The bench is solid.. Sophomores Cody Reynolds and Ryan karel are solid attributes to the team.. Defensively filer will play solid, Terrell Bailey will probably have a couple of blocks, and Bryce Beard will cause Shelly some turnovers... The Matchup of the point guards in the filer vs Shelley game should be great, but Bryce Beard will take control of it and filer will come out on top through the whole tourney

Borah could very well because of their great win down in TF against Highland. They came ready and proved they wanted it more. Filer will most likely win the consolation because they play in a weak confrence and Shelly plays in the toughest 3a confrence in the state.

Anyways not sure about the other larger schools dont really follow them. Even if Prairie does end up losing it won't be by 12 points it will be a much closer game than that maybe 2 points difference or so. saw Mackay play and Krosch is good but gets flustered under pressure, his teamates tend to get in foul trouble. North Gem handled them quite easily in the championship game and played a very good CLEAN game which the Miners do not know how to play clean and decent. I think the Cowboys should not be overlooked by anyone . Four out of five teams within the conference could of just as easily gone to state. Cheering for the Cowboys and not from there.

1st Round Madison 51 Centennial 47 (Madison's patient style of play fits playing in a big Arena) Post Falls 62 Vallivue 60 (Opening Round Game of the day) Eagle 64 Rocky Mtn 51 (Too much balance from Eagle) Lake City 38 Borah 35 (Borah looking forward to a rematch with Eagle and overlook T-Wolves)
2nd Round Post Falls 52 Madison 46 (Rematch of last yrs semis and Trojans even the score) Eagle 71 Lake City 53 (LCHS struggles after grinding out a win in the late night game) Vallivue 60 Cent 55 (Vallivue is just a little bit better) Borah 53 Rocky Mtn 48 (Borah in a tight one)
Championship Post Falls 82 Eagle 78 (This would be an entertaining matchup of two teams that like to run) 3rd Place Madison 45 Lake City 34 (Hawkins vs. Winger is a good coaching matchup of guys that believe in solid team D and patient offense, but Madison has better talent) Consolation Vallivue 57 Borah 50 (Vallivue is definately in the top 4 talent wise)

By Blackout on

Re: Let the Madness begin...
Blackout: The 5A schools are playing in an arena atmosphere and it takes them a while to find their shot with the big backdrop, which is why the 5A scores tend to be a little lower than usual. Having 5 schools from the SIC in the 5A bracket means that schools will be playing for the 3rd or 4th time this season which typically means lower scores. Add in Madison and Lake City that purposely slow the game down and some of the scores will probably be in the 40's and 50's. I'm hoping for a PF/Eagle matchup so we can see both teams getting up and down the floor.

Yesterday was a great day of basketball! I have to imagine that some of the scores are going to tighten up. the 33 point margin of victory by Prairie was amazing. Raft Rivers come from behind victory over Troy was insane. This sets up a possible barn burning for these two teams. However, the edge probably has to go to Prairie. Good Luck to both teams. Saturday is shaping up to be an amazing day of basketball. I hang out in the 1A tournaments and watched some spectacular games. Re: Let the Madness begin...
The Prairie Raft River game was a heck of great game. Intense to the final buzzer. I love the fact that there is a North Idaho Team in every championship game. A question for all of you in the know. When a player fouls out, is he allowed to un-tuck their jersey and walk off of the court leaving only 4 players on the court? Isn't that a technical violation? What I heard at the game was that not all districts enforce the rule. Shouldn't all of the rules be enforced equally around the state and especially at the state tournament? I don't know, just a question. Ty, I would love to see your predictions for the games tomorrow. I will be pulling for all six North Idaho teams.

Wow that Raft River- Prairie game really was a thriller! Congrats to both teams! It really does stink to see a loser out of a game like that.. both were worthy of a state game. Dont get me wrong I love my pirates but my hats off to a very talented Raft River group. Hold your heads high! The starters play the whole game and with LOTS of heart! But tomorros match up is going to be a good one.. GO PIRATES!!!

Wow,that Priest River vs. Shelley game was an unexpected easy victory. The early lead was sustained despite multiple 3 point bombs by last years State Champions. This performance demonstrated the power of the North Idaho team. Go Spartans!

Re: Let the Madness begin...
5A- Eagle 77 Post Falls 74 in an up and down shoot out. If Eagle wins they’ll have claimed 5A titles in basketball and football. 4A- Twin Falls 50 Moscow 42….Twin wins its first 4A Crown. 3A- Salmon 49 Priest River 48...I picked these two in my bracket, only thing I’ve changed is my score prediction. 2A- Kamiah 50 Firth 45….originally I picked Kamiah to lose to Melba. Since they’re here, I like their chances. 1AD1- Castleford 61 Prairie 53….changed the score a bit, but I think if they get Tverdy the ball he’ll be too much inside for Waller and company to handle down low. 1AD2- Carey 51 Nezperce 48
From what I understand the player that fouls out has five seconds until he has to be replaced by a sub. Tonight at the Prairie/Raft River game two players fouled out for Raft with one of them going straight to the bench without the officials whistle to summon in the sub. Prairie fans were upset in what they thought was a missed technical foul accompanied by a valid argument from Coach Bruner. Not sure about the rules varying by classification, to me a tech is a tech at any level.
The North has definitely come to play again this year. I had an old BK alum text me tonight saying “Gotta say, seems like the district three ball has gone downhill.” I wouldn’t say that, both the North and South are going to be well represented in the ‘Chips at all levels.

Re: Let the Madness begin...
what a great 1ADII tournament. The final day scores just show how balanced the whole state is this year. Mackay and North Gem have battled back and forth all season and only one point separated them in the end, their whole conference was very balanced. Congrats to the northern teams state wide this year. Wish we could enjoy the tournament being played back in eastern Id. again!!

Re: Let the Madness begin...
What a great day of Championship basketball. In the end the North Idaho teams didn't let the pressure get to them. They won 4 out of the 6!!!!! We don't get much respect up North so its nice when we are able to come out on top once in awhile. And while the scores didn't indicate it the two that were lost were a lot closer than the scores would indicate. while I love coming down to Boise for the tournament it would be nice to see this travel around the state so we don't always have to travel. Every team played their hearts out. To our new friends from Castleford, you know who you are, that was a great game and your son played very well. I have a feeling you will be back next year. To all of the runners up, you should hold your heads high, knowing that you pushed the championship teams to play their best. You are all winners in my book. Looking forward to Next year. and oh by the way...thanks for the information Ty on the rules when a player fouls out. Love your blogs and thankful that your were wrong on most of your picks. I'm certain that isn't always the case though. Keep up the great work with this website. It is a bonus that other states don't have.

Let's hear it from you Ty???? Why the silence -- No respect. Six amazing North Idaho teams and you are quiet. Good job to all the teams that advance to todays contests. It was amazing basketball and fantastic to watch. Hats off to all the players in the championship games.

Great tournament at all levels. You're right Up North once again the North held it down and came away with some hardware. 4 titles out of 6 is great. I respect all the coaches, players, and fans involved no matter what part of Idaho they are from. Congratulations to all the winners. Can't wait to do it all again next year.

Re: Let the Madness begin...
i personally think that wallace got screwed out of going and being a part of the state tournament this year. yes they played a good troy team but the whole neutral court thing...? they were the number one seed out of the first district. i think that they should have gotten a home court advantage for that.

Well, To kyle and all you other ass prisoners from the south, no Homedale will not beat Priest River, No Filer does not have the best guards aroung, not Filer will not beat Shelley or Priest River and most certainly they will not win state. No Shelley will not win the whole thing, No shelley won't beat Priest River. No Salmon will not win the whole thing, no Salmon will not beat Priest River. Priest River doesn't lose, i Told you four times. Priest River beat the second third and the fourth placing teams all by double digits. Are you guys mentally retarded? Priest River just made a laughing stock of the southern basketball leagues. All i'm asking is, please remember this when making future predictions about 3A basketball in Idaho. Thanks

No, Wallace did not get screwed out of going to state. First of all they suck, second of all they lost. Sucky losers do not get in to the state tournament. Please spare yourself further embarassment and stop posting on this site. Thanks.

Ty
Thanks for starting this discussion forum for everyone to post their thoughts. Predictions are just that and you were entitled to your opinion. I have to give you credit for saying Borah would have a good showing. They performed well at the tourney placing 3rd and beating a solid Madison team for that trophy. I was lucky enough to watch the 2 most athletic teams in the state get it on in the 5A final on Saturday Night. That was a fun game to watch.
I also want to congratulate Priest River on their 1st boys bball championship. Your boys were outstanding and very talented, well deserved trophy.

You other 1AD2 teams: How'd the tournament go for ya'll southern folk? Dont know nuthin 'bout them northern teams did ya? THE SOUTH SHALL RISE AGAIN...but not this year. or the year after. No, honestly, you sucked better than we expected. Carey was kinda tough. And congratulations to mackey, who was ranked above nezperce all year. Nice work on that consolation win!!!

Re: Let the Madness begin...
My original predictions were a bit off, but of those 6 games I chose 5 of the 12 teams. After that I commented and picked the teams that were actually playing and ya I was off. Something I noticed Gary is you didn’t pick any teams or have an opinion at all, other than to tell me I was wrong. Thanks 5A predictions, Borah did have a nice showing and the Post Falls Trojans squad can flat out play. It’s nice to see Idaho basketball getting more athletic.

Re: Renegade
Renegade,
First off wallace does not suck. It isnt our fault we have the toughest path to try to get to the state tournament. I would love to see your team of "champions" beat a team from a league that has won the state tournament 6 out of the last 7 years. I dont know about you, but that tends to make a league very good if they can do that so consistently. so next time before you diss my team just remember yours has about a 94% easier way to get to state there bud.

Re: Let the Madness begin...
I agree with "Wallace Basketball".... I was at the Troy/Wallace game, it was actually a good game. Wallace dosen't suck, they just didn't show up to play. Their primary big guy down low got shut down and only scored 3 pts. when he usually is in doubble digits. I think the no calls by the refs (which is usual come playoff time) affected them mentally as the Troy bigs were pretty rough in the paint and were allowed by the refs to be that way. Did Wallace deserve a spot at state? Absolutely. (I can assure you that Wallace is better than some of the teams from other districts that made their way into the tournament.) In football, there are 8 teams in the state bracket, including the #1 from the first district and 2 from the second. In basketball, there are also 8 teams in the state bracket, but oddly enough, the first district gets .5 and the second district gets 2.5. It makes no sense. The IHSAA is contradicting themselves by this irregularity of representation.

Re: Let the Madness begin...
No "bitchin" here...Just posting facts. Wallace just needs to accept the outcome, work harder and come back with a more focused team next year if they want to make it to state. Much like Troy did this year when Wallace was playing in the semi-finals of state in football while Troy (and every other team in the Whitepine) sat in the stands and watched...

Re: Let the Madness begin...
...Every other team except Prairie that is. Who themselves didn't show up for the championship game and got beat by Oakley. Tough lesson learned, but it appears that they learned as they dominated in basketball! Good job Pirates! (I still feel you should have won state in football too!)

Enough with the trash talking. Priest River is basketball. BOOM. Anyone who disagrees feel free to contact me and i will be more than happy to set up a scrimmage, The State Champions from Priest River would have no problem destroying any of your schools. Oakley, Wallace, Prairie, any of you guys. Thanks!

Re: Let the Madness begin...
I find it odd that you are so gung ho on promoting Priest River Cody... I would agree that Priest river would most likely beat any 1A team in the state as they are no doubt good since they are the 3A state champions. Prairie would have the best chance at beating them, but I'd much rather see you put together a game between Kellogg and Prairie! Kellogg is used to playing 1A schools since at least 8 or so of Kelloggs wins were against 1A Whitepine league schools, so it's actually not that far of a stretch out of your normal schedule.

Re: Let the Madness begin...
Nobody here is doubting that Priest River could beat and of the 1A schools...I'm sure they can. As far as Kellogg goes, I miss printed in my last post...3A Kellogg was plays all the 1A Northstar league teams, not 1A Whitepine teams. Again, props to Priest river, I'm very proud of them for being so successful this year. Maybe you could put them up against Post Falls to see who the real king of the first district is....

Re: Let the Madness begin...
Northernpower, Post Falls and Priest River would be a good matchup to decide the king of the state, look on the blog on Gary Jones article on the championship game awards there is some interesting debate about PR and PF. Me personally, PR by 5. PF is athletic, but Weimer and Holbrook are just too good a combo for PF to handle.
