Good article in Wednesday's Twin Falls Times News about a critical shortage in soccer referees.  Good timing with the state soccer tournament ready to begin.

David Bashore, the writer, points out that some schools in District IV had to reschedule games because of the shortage of referees and the problem could get worse before it gets better:

One of the bright spots was that younger referees were coming in, and they were recruiting other younger prospects.  But new referees can only be assistant referees - the ones who work the sidelines - for around two years while they are trained.

That means next year could lead to schools having to schedule based on referee availability until some of these newer officials are ready to stand in the middle of the field.

Bashore points out that, nationally, wrestling and volleyball have shortages in officials.  But he says, in Idaho, the more-pressing need is soccer officials.

It's impacting the ability of our kids to play the games.  Are you in a position to help?

Re: Official shortage in District IV

I do remember the soccer coach being the referee too before soccer was sanctioned. Maybe they should let younger guys come up. Soccer having to be played in light would make it hard to get some officials. Besides soccer is not a popular spectator sport and I don't think it will be anytime soon. NOt in America anyway.
