Athletics at Mackay High School are getting a lifeline.
While the district’s school board passed a budget Wednesday that left out extracurricular activities, the board also set a date for another levy.
A $330,000, two-year levy failed 61-49 on May 19, leaving no money to fund extracurricular activities. The board originally thought it had to wait six months to put another levy before voters, but in fact needs only to advertise the levy for three weeks.
A $250,000, one-year levy will go before voters July 7.
“Hopefully that passes and we’ll have extracurriculars back in place,” Mackay athletic director Jack McKelvey said. “If it doesn’t pass, the community has offered to raise the necessary money to at least fund football and volleyball to start the school year.”
McKelvey estimated the cost for a football and volleyball program for both the high school and middle school at $15,000 to $20,000.
But he thinks the levy will make up the 12 votes now that voters know what is at stake.
“We’ve kind of been waiting for someone to hit the Powerball and solve all our problems,” McKelvey said. “But now it doesn’t look like that has to happen.”
Mackay has combined to win a 11 football and boys basketball state championships since 1996.
