It was talked about at the IHSAA level earlier this spring, now one eastern-Idaho school district is taking the matter into its own hands.

In a cost-cutting move, the Fremont School District voted to cut the number of games scheduled by each athletic team in the district.

It effects North Fremont and South Fremont High School.

A couple short lines from the Rexburg Standard-Journal:

North Fremont will play two fewer football games (seven) than allowed (nine). And South Fremont will play eight games, rather than the allowed nine.

... and ...

In both schools, the soccer schedule is the hardest hit. Teams are allowed to schedule 18 games, but at North Fremont 12 games will be played, and at South Fremont, 14 games are scheduled. Trips to Aberdeen and American Falls have been cut.

Re: Fremont School District votes to cut games

I am just wondering where the cost savings are for cutting football games. In most school football is one of the only revenue sports (also boys basketball). I would think a better move would be to expand the football season. One more home game. The equipment, coaches and etc are already paid for. the gate receipt at most schools far exceed lights refs and other costs. I understand in other sports they can say it will save money especially where no gate is taken. I hate to see any sport cut. Start charging at all events and add games to sports that generate income. Why is it the NFL wants to add another game? More revenue.
