Right now around the state, all the buzz is and should be wrapped around the girls state tournament that begins today at 1:15 PM (Mountain Time). But for the sake of being complete, a quick take on the Vandal/Bronco game last night.

Sometimes, the worst thing that can happen is getting out to a big lead. When Boise State jumped out to a 8-0 lead and then 15-2, the hardest part is to keep pouring it on. The Vandals, to their credit, changed up their defense, slowed the game down and got the tempo back to their liking.

Idaho, when they did play man to man, put on tremendous pressure on Boise State's guards. They pick up about 35 feet from the basket and, especially against teams that don't set high picks with their posts, do a good job of hard switching. Really causes problems and keeps teams from getting in their offense. This program is certainly heading in the right direction, only 2 games out of second place in the WAC.

Boise State fans: great job packing Taco Bell Arena! For two straight games, you showed that this could possibly be a basketball town (or at least the up and coming little brother to football). Please keep going to the games. One loss does not a season ruin. Coming in to this year, the Broncos were expected to finish in fifth place. Ahead of pace, 1 game out of second and beating #17 Utah State means that things are as good or better than expected.

OK, now back to the state championships. The good news: 44 games are going to be webcast by IdahoSports.com - the biggest undertaking in Idaho history! The bad news: if you are tuning in to watch the girls 5A 1:15 (Centennial vs. Lake City) or 3:00 (Highland vs. Boise) games you are going to have to listen to me. What can I say? In this economy I'm cheap help.

Re: A brief pause to reflect on last night

The Vandals are up and coming in basketball and should put even more pressure on the league next year. Kudos to the Vandals for their sweep of the Broncos this year.

Re: A brief pause to reflect on last night

Coach Graham has done a great job with what he has, which is; a good solid team of average college talent with one fairly consistent long range shooter (Noonen). Boise State has no true point guard and Idaho does (Hopkins). Ask anyone or any coach and you must have a point guard to lead your team in all facets of the game, period. Idaho is not filled with a lot of talent either but again, their athleticism and drive has and will take them farther in the tournament than Boise. Do not get me wrong, Thomas is a good player but not the true point you need. Thomas needs to quit talking and read the definition of what a point guard is and does and then, maybe then, will Boise State do well in the tournament. Congrats to the Vandals, keep up the good work and grow. One other thing; I moved hear a few years ago. Boise is not a basketball city, its nothing but football and always will be which is unfortunate for us B-ball fans. Its the opposite of say Duke. They will never ever be a football school, its all basketball!. There are some big schools that have both but were in the WAC and that's as good as it is going to get. Boise fans are spoiled from there football which is understandable. BSU has a good not great consistent solid football team and program. Real fans at your bigger schools support all the sports at the school not just football. Leave coach Graham alone, he is a good coach, he just needs to recruit better players if he can being in the WAC. Idaho b-ball fans are more supportive. Be like Gonzaga. There fans come out to games weather its bodunk college or memphis. Hope you all get the message.
I am out.
Go Vikings!
